In Process Industry, Utilities are the much needed middle man between raw material and finished product that can trigger considerably both production and its cost.
Cost of a Utility is the product of its specific consumption and unit cost. In practice, there lie a number of factors that trigger the consumption pattern of a Utility. It starts from technology selection, choice of a process & equipment depending on raw material, sustained & steady operation, quality & compatibility of an utility, its feeding & control, sizing an equipment & drive and overall the best possible utilisation of a rated capacity.
Utility performance stands for a relative satisfaction or dis-satisfaction against some standard performance indicators and thus can explain the economic behaviour of an unit in terms of its operating efficiency. Indirectly it helps to comply with various statutory requirements and has a long-term support and satisfaction effect on Green-field and Society.
To support good economics, Utility Performance Enhancement does not always mean reduction of consumption of an Utility, but always justify an optimal consumption only. Otherwise it may sometime trigger the cost of Quality and also the cost of Production by decreasing its throughput & technical yield.
To control utility consumption, one has to measure and monitor its specific consumption on day-to-day basis, if possible also on hourly basis. In case of a deviation and to mitigate it, one has to compile & analyse all the relevant data to find out its root causes and act accordingly. To improve on long term, one has to compare his own performance against the best in the field and in some cases may need to plan for a budgetary solution.
